Warning: Extreme Allergy Season Ahead
While many are looking forward to the end of what has felt like an endless
winter, for hay fever sufferers, spring can be a dreaded time. 1
This year, milder winter temperatures have caused plants in some areas to bloom
earlier than usual, while rainy weather has led to quick plant growth and
mold. The result? Spring misery has arrived
early. 2
So what can an allergy sufferer do besides stock up on antihistamines and
tissues?
Don’t let allergies take all the spring out of your
step
Arming yourself with information is the best way to minimize the impact of
seasonal allergies. Identifying what causes your allergic reactions can help you
avoid the worst of them.
The causes of seasonal allergies are as varied as the people who suffer from
them. Have you noticed a pattern in your symptoms? One of these suspects may be
to blame:
- Heat and high humidity promote the growth of molds.
-
Cool nights and warm days allow tree, grass and ragweed pollens to thrive.
-
In spring and summer, tree and grass pollen levels tend to peak in the
evening.
-
In late summer and early fall, ragweed pollen levels tend to peak in the
morning.
- Windy and warm days often result in surging pollen counts.
-
After a rainfall, pollen counts may go up, even though the rain temporarily
washes pollen away.1
Duck and cover
You can’t outrun allergens, of course, but you can lessen your exposure
to them. A few steps can help minimize your discomfort:
- Keep windows and doors closed.
- Watch local weather reports for pollen and mold counts.
-
After working or playing outdoors, shower and change your
clothes.1
- If you must work outside, wear a NIOSH-rated filter mask.
- A deep spring cleaning will help get rid of mold and other allergens.
-
Use a HEPA room air cleaner rated with a Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR). If
you have central air, use air filters with a MERV rating of 11 or 12. Change
air filters every three months.3
